We are a small but friendly and welcoming church
community. We meet every Sunday at 11am for
a service of Holy Communion in our beautiful, ancient church. You would be very welcome to join us. Families with children are especially welcome
at all of our services.
St Mary’s Church is situated in the heart of the beautiful
and historic Middlesex village of Harmondsworth, which is mentioned in the
Doomsday book. The church and its community are here to serve everyone who
lives in the ‘Heathrow villages’ of Harmondsworth, Longford and Sipson. As a church community, we are seeking to grow in faith, in
numbers and in our ability to serve our local community. The 3 strands of our mission focus at St Mary’s
are:
Focused on God
Committed to one another
Involved in God's world
As you can see from these pictures, the centre of Harmondsworth
is a beautiful, unspoilt English village focused around the village green. At the heart of the village are two vibrant
pubs, The Five Bells and The Crown, St Mary’s Church and The Great Barn, a
spectacular 15th Century Tithe Barn which is the largest wooden
building in England. But our beautiful
village just so happens to be right next door to Heathrow Airport, with all the
significant challenges that brings, alongside opportunities such as employment. For a generation, the very existence of the
village has been under threat from the plans to build a third runway at
Heathrow Airport, and if the current plans went ahead, this would result in the
destruction of all but a small fraction of the village.
St Mary’s Church itself is a stunning and historic listed Medieval
building, the oldest parts of which date from 1067. We take very seriously our
responsibilities as custodians of this significant building, where Jesus has
been worshipped for nearly 1000 years.
St Mary’s is now in need of a great deal of restoration and is on the
Historic England ‘Buildings at Risk’ register. We are just embarking on the long process of developing
plans for a wholesale restoration of St Mary’s so that it can be made fit for
mission and ministry for another 1000 years.
